Last month, I went for my general eye check, and I wanted to take a moment to share something personal with you all. I have a vision condition called keratoconus. Essentially, this means my cornea is more pointed than usual, which affects how I see light.

I’ve already had surgeries on both eyes to prevent it from worsening, as this condition can lead to more invasive procedures or even prevent me from driving at night in the future.

The reason I’m bringing this up now, is to highlight the importance of regular eye checks. Last year, with all the busyness of running the business and planning my wedding, I delayed my eye exam. Unfortunately, this led to some loss of vision in one eye that might have been preventable.

During my recent check-up, my optometrist also brought up another issue: my migraines. They introduced me to specialised lenses designed to block certain light rays that trigger migraines. As an OT, this intrigued me because sensory stimuli are a significant trigger for my headaches. I’ve been wearing these glasses and, to my surprise, they’ve made a massive difference in reducing my migraines, which is such a relief!

With this in mind, I want to remind all our families to book your yearly eye checks—not just for yourselves but for your children too. Eye health is a crucial part of our overall well-being. It’s something we often discuss during initial assessments, as we want to rule out any visual issues that could impact therapy.

You might also hear your therapist mention behavioral optometry and other specialized approaches. If you’re curious about what might be best for your child, don’t hesitate to reach out to your therapist. And if your child needs glasses, we can help guide you through supporting them to wear and adjust to them!

Let’s prioritize our eye health and keep it in check!
